In 1897 a black schoolteacher, Isaiah H Lofton was appointed as postmaster of Hogansville. On September 15, 1897, Postmaster Loften, was the victim of an attempted assassination by unknown assailants after leaving the city’s post office located in an area known as “Cross Town” in the black business district.
In September of 2019 the Georgia Historical Society in conjunction with the City of Hogansville dedicated a new Georgia Civil Rights marker, trail and park in recognition of the attempted assassination of Postmaster Lofton.
The City of Hogansville would like to invite you to be a part of this historical monument to justice and persever-ance. The City of Hogansville will be taking application for engraved paver bricks to be a lasting memorial to the historic “Cross Town”, the story of Postmaster Isaiah H Lofton, and the many recognized and unsung heroes from our community.
Each $ 30.00 brick 4x8 includes up to three lines of engraving, with up to 20 characters per line, including spaces and punctuation.
